Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship
In 2018, to honor and commemorate the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass, a scholarship program was established in support of students attending accredited historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) nationwide. The program, which recognizes and celebrates one of the most transformative figures in our nation’s history, will be administered and managed by UNCF for a period of 20 years, through 2039.
Program Design
The Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship Program was established by Tony Signore, whose knowledge, respect and deep admiration for Douglass was instilled in him in 1982 by the Jesuits at Fordham University. To honor one of the most important African American figures in our country’s history, the Signore Family designed and funded the program to recognize this historic leader, providing scholarship support to outstanding young women and men attending HBCUs.
The program awards two (2) $10,000 scholarships each year to exceptional HBCU seniors (one female and one male) who have demonstrated high academic achievement, strong leadership skills, commitment to community service and unmet financial need.
Requirements
Be enrolled full-time as a senior at any accredited public or private four-year historically black college or university (HBCU).
Possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale as verified through submission of a current transcript.
Demonstrate a commitment to community service.
Have a demonstrated, unmet financial need as verified by their college or university.

FSF University
FSF University is a free, self-paced digital program delivered on Arizona State University’s Canvas platform, FSF’s official Learning Management System (LMS) partner. Together, we’ve created a robust, accessible space where students can learn how to research, build, and master their FSF Case Study and prepare for scholarship success.
Students start with three introductory modules, all available online now, then select an FSF discipline: Design and Product Development, Merchandising, Marketing, or Business Strategy. The next four modules, released in early June 2025, offer step-by-step guidance to creating a case study. All seven educational modules include video presentations, quizzes, and assignments, to help students submit their best work.
As Marie Colletta, Head of Education Programs, explains: “Through FSF University’s seven on-demand modules, you’ll learn everything you need—from choosing your discipline to researching, drafting, and submitting your case study. The best part? You can work at your own pace, anytime, anywhere.”
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
FSF University covers everything you need to know to complete your FSF Case Study:
Understanding the 2026 competition theme
How to select your discipline
How to conduct research
How to structure and draft your case study
How to polish and submit your final work
You’ll also receive qualitative feedback from FSF Adjunct Faculty partners within 48 business hours of each assignment submission, helping you improve and refine your ideas ahead of the competition deadline. Discussion boards and optional office hours offer additional support as you move through the course.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
If you are an eligible student, your first step will be to enroll in FSF’s application portal, Wizehive, which you can access from our How to Apply guide. Once you’ve enrolled with FSF, you’ll receive your FSF University login credentials and instructions via email.
The program is self-paced but structured, with suggested weekly milestones to help you stay on track. Expect to dedicate about 2 to 3 hours per week over 6 to 8 weeks, but if you fall behind, don’t worry—you can catch up anytime before the final FSF University course completion deadline. Just be sure to allow time for feedback and revisions.

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program (Gilman Program) supports students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. The Gilman Program is a competitive, merit-based scholarship. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. The Institute of International Education has administered the program since its inception in 2001.
The program encourages students to study or intern abroad in all world regions and from all U.S. states, academic fields, and types of institutions. Almost 60% of all Gilman scholars come from small towns or rural communities across the United States.
Requirements
A citizen or national of the United States;
An undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States (including both two-year and four-year institutions);
Receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship;
In the process of applying to, or accepted to, a credit-bearing study abroad or internship program. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to award disbursement;
Applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or location with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Travel Advisory System. It is important to note that certain areas within a country or location that has an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2 may be designated within the Travel Advisory as either Level 3 or Level 4; Gilman scholars will not be allowed to travel to these specific areas. Gilman scholars are unable to participate in programs located in a country or location — or an area within a country or location — that is designated as either a Level 3 (“Reconsider travel to”) or Level 4 (“Do not travel to”).
Application Process
Step 1: Submit application by student deadline.
The following are critical components of the application:
Statement of Purpose and Community Impact Essays
Transcripts (unofficial and official both accepted)
Abroad Program Details (only credit-bearing programs are eligible)
Certifying Advisors (select your study abroad and financial aid advisor)
As a reminder, only applications submitted through the online portal will be considered.
A PDF version of the online application is available for reference. As a reminder, only applications submitted through the online portal will be considered.
Step 2: Both Study Abroad and Financial Aid Certifying Advisors must certify your application by the advisor deadline.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that both advisors have certified their application by the advisor deadline.
All applicants must contact the appropriate offices at their home institutions to determine the correct study abroad and financial aid certifying advisors they should select to certify their application.
If an advisor is not listed within the online application, reach out to the appropriate advisor(s) at your institution and ask them to register as a Gilman advisor prior to the application deadline. Once they are registered you will be able to select your institution and advisors in your application.
Applications without certifications will not be considered.
